Making It Reel
About the program
The Making it Reel – Film & Television Traineeships Program was developed by SkillsHub and screen industry partners to address the need for stronger on-the-job training in the film and television industry. Funded by Skills Victoria, this program financed traineeship opportunities with screen industry employers.
Background
A lack of on-the-job training opportunities since the cessation of film and television traineeships in the late 1980s has made it difficult for the screen industries to keep up with new technologies and the convergence across entertainment platforms. Consequently, vocational requirements and training pathways needed to be revisited.
Program results
- Placement of 14 people into traineeships in the screen industries.
- Placement of 4 industry professionals into training and assessment qualifications so that they can pass on their skills and knowledge to others.
- Identification of ‘road blocks’ that may impede skills development in the screen industries.
Program recommendations
- Remove funding barriers to employers participating in VET.
- Investigate alternative employment models.
- Market the Australian Apprenticeship system as a viable career pathway for the screen industries.
- Skills Victoria to work with Registered Training Organisations to ensure that they are capable to deliver the recommendations of DIIRD’s Our Vision on Screen strategy.
- Foster and promote more career pathways between schools and VET, and VET and higher education.
