Measuring the Value of Training in the Screen Sectors

In 2008, SkillsHub received funding to research skills shortages within the rapidly expanding Victorian screen industry (film, television and games) and to identify developments in employment, volunteering and training opportunities.

Research findings included:

  • Skills gaps within the screen industry are expected to significantly worsen over the 2 to 5 year period. This is due to the expansion of the industry, rapidly evolving technologies and the lack of people taking up technical positions.
  • There is greater convergence between multimedia, games, film and television. People are increasingly working across these sectors.
  • Industry workers in technical roles are retiring at a greater rate and there is a lack of suitably trained individuals to replace them.
  • Since traineeships are no longer used in the industry, there is a need for stronger career pathways and succession planning.
  • There is a shortage of Production Managers, Colour Graders and Film Crew and a demand for skilled people to work within major commercial TV networks.
  • Skills gaps are not reflected in DEWR or ABS Statistics and more information is needed to accurately describe the industry's growth and current and future skills needs.

Overall, SkillsHub's research complemented the range of statistical information available to government and provided more insight into key industry developments and skills needs. The report assisted government to view trends and developments within the screen industry and to anticipate specific skills needs required to meet future demand.
